Today’s prompt takes me back to an earlier memory, that I had actually blogged about, two bloganuary’s back. I had a yellow toy car that I was quite fond of, and I remember bawling my lungs out when I lost it. Check it out for your reading pleasure:
Well, in addition to that toy, I can think of not one but three four items that I was attached to in my youth!
- My backpack: For the longest time, people would rarely see me without a backpack. It was a hangover from college days and it sorta became my trademark, an item that I simply could not be without. I don’t carry my backpack with me anymore.
- My phone: Definitely something I was attached to as a youth, and I am still attached to. I carry it wherever I go, ironically as a person who is trying to use their smartphone less. More than social media though, I use it for reading books and learning new languages, not to mention the occassional work communication. I would like to be less attached to my phone.
- A big pillow This is funny, but as a child, there used to be a big pillow that I used to love. Legend has it that it was kept beside me when I was a baby, and as I grew up, I would never let it go. I would have two pillows in my bedroom as I grew up, one that I used to rest my head on, and the other – said pillow, that would be my constant bedfellow. It stayed with me right through high school and college. I have no idea where it is now, and I am no longer attached to it. Acutely aware of my parents’ hoarding habits, it is probably living its shelf life in the attic, back at my parents’ home.
- The Video Cassette Player at home: Stop judging me already, you. What can I say, I was (and still am) a home video nut with a never-ending fascination for VHS technology. I grew up with videotapes and the dusty old AKAI Video Cassette Player was my favourite device. After a decade and a half of faithful service, it breathed its last somewhere in the mid-2000s and is resting in my parents’ attic.
P.S. I am totally getting a super-cool retro VCR, some tapes, and a funky CRT TV in the near future for old times’ sake!
These days, I am not particularly attached to any material thing (except my phone and watch maybe)? I think it’s a good thing. Because we come into this world with nothing, and we leave it with nothing also!

This post was written as part of the Bloganuary challenge of WordPress.com. Bloganuary is a month-long challenge, where bloggers are challenged to write a new blog post every day, based on a daily writing prompt. You will need a WordPress.com account to get the prompts, but you can blog on any platform of your choice – OR even journal privately. Oh btw, there is no bloganuary police – so you can pick your own prompts if you wish to!
