Bloganuary Day 26: My favorite family traditions

Bloganuary writing prompt
Write about a few of your favorite family traditions.

My family actually does not have a ton of traditions. We live in the moment, mostly. We make plans as we go – it is a fun life.

With that said, we do maintain a couple of light traditions. Those are celebrating Vishu and Onam, when all of us are home.

Vishu marks the beginning of the new year in the Kerala/Malayalam almanac, whereas Onam is our harvest festival, both of which are big deals for us Malayalees. Even though ours is as far from being an agrarian family as possible, we still celebrate both festivals, pretty much like the rest of the malayalees across the world. We use the time to dress up, eat copious amounts of sadya, and spend time with family. That is exactly what we do for both Vishu and Onam. In fact for our last Vishu, we even gave sadya to our cats, which they enjoyed.

These festivals give us a warm cozy feeling. In many ways these festivals make us feel beautiful and fulfilled.

So even for people who live in the moment and don’t follow any tradition, following the traidtions of Vishu and Onam make us fulfilled and humbled.

Bloganuary is a month-long challenge, where bloggers are challenged to write a new blog post every day, based on a daily writing prompt. You will need a WordPress.com account to get the prompts, but you can blog on any platform of your choice – OR even journal privately. Oh btw, there is no bloganuary police – so you can pick your own prompts if you wish to!
